How to arrange a bouquet: colour and shape
How to arrange a bouquet: contents
- Choose a colour palette
- Combine flowers with contrasting textures
- Choose wrapping or a container
How to arrange a bouquet begins with a clear idea of its shape and colour. You might be gathering flowers for your own vase or putting together a gift. In either case, start with a clean working surface, a clean vase if needed, and tools that will make a neat cut through the stems.
An arrangement takes shape through proportion as well as colour. Some flowers will form the main outline, while smaller flowers or foliage fill the spaces between them. Keep turning the bouquet as you work so you can see how it looks from different sides.
A reference photograph can help, but look for features you can describe: a rounded outline, loose stems or a narrow colour palette. You do not need to reproduce every flower to understand why a design appeals to you. Let the stems you actually have guide the final proportions.
The following steps cover colour, texture and presentation. Prepare the flowers too: remove foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut fresh stems at an angle with a clean, sharp tool before placing them in water.
How to arrange a bouquet around a colour palette
Choose one main colour as a starting point. It might be the recipient’s favourite shade or a colour already present in the room. Add neighbouring shades for a softer effect, or use a smaller amount of a contrasting colour for definition. You can compare single-colour bouquets to see how different shapes work within one palette.
Consider where the bouquet will be seen. A pale arrangement against a pale wall can look quieter than the same flowers on a dark table. Choose according to the person and setting rather than assigning colours by age or assuming one palette is suitable for every occasion.
Combine flowers with contrasting textures
Choose the main flowers, then look at the spaces around them. A rounded flower head can work beside a finer stem or a different leaf shape. Check what is available and in good condition; a seasonal reference does not guarantee that a particular bloom is currently in stock.
Foliage or a branch can change the outline without adding another strong colour. Use a small amount first and step back to judge it. If the extra material distracts from the flowers, take some away. Keep the lower stems clear enough to sit comfortably together in the hand or vase.

Choose wrapping or a container
Wrapping should support the bouquet’s shape and protect the flowers without hiding them. If you prefer a flower box or another container, choose one suited to the arrangement and how it will be cared for. A vase must be clean and stable. Packaging intended for transport may need to be removed before the stems go into water.

Make a final check of the outline, then remove any leaves below the water level. Avoid forcing too many stems into a narrow opening. The bouquet should sit securely without crushed flower heads or stems bending against the edge.
Display fresh flowers away from direct sun, ripening fruit and air conditioning vents. In a warm Dubai home, check the water daily and refresh it regularly. Good care lets the arrangement keep its shape after the wrapping has been set aside.
