Hydrangea care tips for pots and bouquets
Hydrangea care tips: contents
- Choose a bright, sheltered position
- Check moisture before watering
- Prune according to the plant type
- Avoid heat and direct air conditioning
- Use fertiliser with care
Hydrangea care tips depend first on what you have received: a cut bouquet or a living plant in a pot. Both need protection from harsh heat, but their water and feeding needs are different. A vase holds cut stems in clean water; a potted plant needs a suitable growing medium and drainage.
Hydrangeas are often chosen for their full flower heads and varied colours. That fullness makes their condition easy to notice, but drooping does not tell you the cause by itself. Check the water or soil and the position before adding anything. Moving a plant repeatedly or watering without checking can make it harder to understand what it needs.
Keep the care label if one is supplied. The plant type and its previous growing conditions are more useful than a fixed rule based only on the season.
For cut stems, use a clean vase, fresh water and a clean blade to recut the stem ends at an angle. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline. Our bouquet care guide covers these steps in more detail.

The sections below focus mainly on potted hydrangeas. In Dubai, do not assume that an open balcony is a suitable position simply because the plant is outdoors.
Hydrangea care tips for light and shade
A bright position protected from strong direct sun is a cautious starting point for a potted hydrangea. Watch the actual conditions through the day. A spot that feels gentle in the morning may become much hotter later, particularly behind glass or beside a wall that holds heat.
An exposed terrace can be too hot for this plant. Choose a sheltered position and check the care guidance for your particular hydrangea before moving it outdoors. For cut flowers, keep the vase indoors, away from direct sunlight, and give the flower heads enough space to avoid crushing the petals.
Check moisture before watering
Feel the growing medium and check the pot before watering. Aim for evenly moist soil without leaving the roots sitting in water. Let excess water drain and empty the outer container or saucer. Avoid a rigid weekly schedule: pot size, heat and the room’s conditions change how quickly moisture is lost. Check a fresh bouquet’s water level daily instead.
Prune according to the plant type
Hydrangeas do not all flower on the same kind of growth, so hard pruning without identifying the plant can remove future flowers. Follow guidance for the variety before cutting back healthy stems. Remove damaged material with clean tools when appropriate, but do not treat a cut bouquet as a plant that needs pruning. Its stem ends only need recutting for vase care.
Protect from heat and direct air conditioning
Keep the plant or vase away from an air conditioning outlet. A strong cold draft can dry exposed flowers even when the room feels cool. Avoid leaving hydrangeas in a hot car or moving them straight into intense outdoor heat. A stable, suitable position is more useful than deliberately creating hot and cold cycles to encourage flowers.
Use fertiliser with care
For a potted plant, use a suitable fertiliser according to its label and the plant’s growth, rather than adding supplements on a fixed seasonal date. Do not add fertiliser to a cut bouquet. If flower food is supplied for cut stems, use it only at the stated dilution. Extra product does not mean better care.

Keep notes on the position and when you water a potted plant. If its condition changes, those details help you review one factor at a time. For bouquets, remove spent stems and keep the vase clean, with no ripening fruit nearby.
If you are choosing flowers as a gift, browse hydrangea bouquets and pass the appropriate care advice to the recipient. Knowing which care routine applies is a useful part of the gift.
